On February 6, several team members from Wells Fargo helped kitchen staff and member volunteers prepare and serve the noon meal for the clients at Haven Toronto, a charity and drop-in centre where elder homeless, marginally housed, and socially isolated men can feel safe, form and cultivate friendships, and become part of a community.
Formerly known as The Good Neighbour's Club, the charity was established in 1933 and is open 365 days a year, providing healthy meals 3 times daily at 8 am, noon and 3 pm, clothing, showers, laundry, recreational amenities, as well as onsite access to crisis and housing counsellors, on-site nurses, dental hygienists and barbers, and much more.
For the Wells Fargo team members, the day started with a guided tour of the Haven Toronto facilities, where they were able to learn more about its mission and history before heading to the kitchen to start working. There, they helped dice vegetables, serve meals, and clean the refrigerator and serving area.
"While we were there, we had the opportunity to interact with elderly homeless men who needed shelter from the harsh Canadian winter," said Firas Anani, Operational Risk Consultant for Wells Fargo. "It increased our awareness of the struggles they go through and made us realize that homelessness can happen to anyone."
By upholding Wells Fargo's Vision, Values, and Objectives, as well as the Haven Toronto principles, the team members were able to unite and support an important cause, while discovering the importance of giving back to the community. "I believe our volunteer work was truly meaningful and a good way to give back to the society, as it gives us the chance to help people who need it the most," concluded Firas about their volunteer day.
